Lipoprotein (a) or Lp(a) is a type of lipoprotein that carries cholesterol in the blood. Elevated levels of Lp(a) are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. This test is used to assess individual cardiovascular risk, particularly when traditional lipid tests do not fully explain a person’s heart disease risk.
