Test Code -HT1159
The HBV Immunity Profile (HBsAg, Anti HBsAg, Anti HbcAg-Total) evaluates immune protection against Hepatitis B by detecting antibodies to the virus. It helps determine immunity from vaccination or past infection. This test is advised for healthcare workers, individuals at risk of exposure, and those needing vaccination assessment.
Description
The HBV Immunity Profile is a comprehensive diagnostic test used to assess a person’s immune status regarding Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus, which can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. The HBV Immunity Profile helps healthcare providers evaluate an individual's exposure to the virus, determine whether they are immune to HBV, or identify current infections. This profile includes three key components: HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen), Anti-HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antibody), and Anti-HBcAg-Total (Total Hepatitis B Core Antibody).
HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen): This is a protein on the surface of the Hepatitis B virus. The presence of HBsAg in the blood indicates active infection or chronic HBV infection. A positive HBsAg test result suggests that the individual is infectious and can spread the virus to others. If the antigen is present for more than six months, it may indicate chronic infection.
Anti-HBs (Hepatitis B Surface Antibody): The presence of Anti-HBsAg indicates that the individual has developed immunity to the Hepatitis B virus, either through natural recovery from a past infection or vaccination. A positive result means that the person is protected against future HBV infection. It is considered a marker of successful vaccination or resolved infection.
Anti-HBcAg-Total (Total Hepatitis B Core Antibody): This test detects antibodies to the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus. A positive result suggests past exposure to the virus, either through acute or chronic infection. Unlike Anti-HBsAs, Anti-HBcAg does not provide immunity but indicates that a person has been exposed to the virus at some point in their life.In conclusion, the HBV Immunity Profile (HBsAg, Anti-HBs, Anti-HBcAg-Total) is a critical tool for understanding an individual’s Hepatitis B status, whether they have been exposed to the virus, are currently infected, or are immune due to vaccination or past infection. This test not only aids in the diagnosis and treatment of Hepatitis B but also plays an essential role in preventing transmission, ensuring the health and safety of individuals and communities alike.
